As Ealing, Hounslow and Harlow’s leading swim school, we understand that choosing the right swimming lesson provider is a big deal. It’s likely you’ll have some questions that need answering before you make your final choice, so to help you better understand the Comfort Aquatics approach we sat down with Comfort Aquatics Director Adam Comfort to try and answer some of the questions we get asked the most:

Q. How does Comfort Aquatics track a swimmer’s progression?

You might have heard about our Home Portal which is where all of our swimming lesson bookings are made. But you may not know that our amazing Home Portal also allows parents the chance to see your swimmer's progression on a weekly basis. We know how important it is to keep you updated but with a busy poolside and back-to-back lessons, this doesn't give us or you time to speak to the Lead instructor or your own instructor. You can log in to your portal account anywhere and anytime via your smart devices, so why not bookmark it, check it and use it to keep up to date.

Q. Why should parents consider booking swimming lessons?

In my opinion I believe that learning to swim is a very important life skill that could potentially save your life or someone else's. Did you also know that swimming is actually a whole body work out and with the buoyancy of the water it has no impact on any part of the body. Swimming is also great fun!

Q. What would you do if one of your students was afraid of the water?

Every swimmer is different, so our paramount focus is on continuity and repetition which we pair with a huge amount of fun and games in order to distract them from their apprehension and fear. Every swimmer is like popcorn, everyone will pop it just takes time for each one to do so!

Q. How do you teach complex swimming techniques?

For the younger levels we split each stroke into progressive activities, while for the older levels we split each part of the stroke into complex and individual drills to build their understanding. It's all about progression and having that basic understanding to build upon.

Q. Which factors do you consider when preparing for swim classes?

When it comes to how we prepare each for our swimming lessons, we take into consideration a lot of different factors including their age, their ability and each and every one of our swimmer's personalities so we can adapt our lessons accordingly, meet your expectations and support your child in the best way possible while attending our classes.

The start of a new term is also a really great opportunity to update us on any additional needs your child may have so that we can adapt our lessons to meet these needs. Whether it's a minor change or something that needs careful planning, please always take a moment to talk to us (directly or via email) and we keep a record of any needs.

Q. How do you motivate your students?

For us the most important thing is the scheme of work. We base all our lessons on the Swimming Teacher's Association's (STA) International Learn to Swim Programme which aims to provide a complete progressive aquatic pathway for learners of all ages to help them go from absolute beginner to safe proficient swimmers. We use this as our foundation to build upon using themed lessons and games to enhance the learning experience and keep things fresh for your children. At the end of every term, certificates and badges are awarded to reinforce their lesson progression and build a sense of achievement and pride!

Q. How do you identify a student’s experience level?

Over the years, we've found that a quick assessment at a child's first lesson is always the best way to assess their current abilities as doing swimming trials can be daunting and, in our experience, doesn't work . We believe it's better for a child to be moved up and motivated instead of being moved down because they're not strong enough for that class.

Q. How do you support anxious parents?

As a parent myself I know it's totally natural to feel anxious, but as a qualified swimming teacher and the head of a swim school supporting over 2000 students this is what we specialise in, so you can trust us. We understand that both parents and swimmers can be full of apprehension whether it's simply getting into the pool or tackling something new, but we'll get there together, we promise! If you want to discuss your child's progress or have any questions, then we're always happy to chat and reassure you.

Q. What kind of training/certifications do your instructors have?

First of all I'd like to say thank you to every single one of our teaching team (past and present) without whom we wouldn't be able to do what we do. We take training very seriously and before joining we ensure that they all the necessary qualifications in place with some having qualified through Swim England and others qualified through the Swimming Teachers Association (STA). We also have individuals with specialist qualifications like Parent and Baby or Coaching. Each of our team have a Teacher Safety Award, an up-to-date DBS check and their own personal insurance in place.
